Project Snapshot: Webster-pak® Monitor
LX developed this intelligent medical device for medication monitoring
If you take daily medication, there has probably been a moment when you had been unsure whether you had taken your medication that day. That’s why Webstercare came to LX with a product concept that tracks when clients take their required medications.
Specifically designed for use with Webster-pak’s, for clients who are required to take multiple medications per day, LX engineered a device that triggers reminder alerts and notifies carers of the status of the Webster-pak through real-time monitoring of daily doses. This allows them to make data informed decisions around care.
The device acts as a stand for Webster-pak’s, known as a smart base, and works by scanning the foils integrity of the pack and recording what medications are taken, at what time. This sends data remotely to a platform for carers and clients that can be accessed at any time.
For this project, LX developed the systems engineering, firmware and electronic hardware that enables the Webster-pak to operate. LX also worked across the certification of this device.
Gerard Stevens, Managing Director of Webstercare, stated: “We were happy with the way LX works with us because they kept to budget, which is a big thing. They kept the communication up, there’s been good consultation. You can feel when a project has meaning to a company. They’ve got involvement in this, they want it to work. The feedback we get from people who know about this is that you can feel that it’s got huge potential. “
The basis of this device is to help those taking medication to take the right dose at the right time and manage complex medication regimes, helping avoid accidental double-dosing, which can often be more damaging than missing a dose.
Emilie Delaforge, LX’s Project Manager, commented: “Developing this project in collaboration with Webstercare was very rewarding, especially considering we take a lot of pride in developing products that provide people with a better lifestyle.”
Now a patented design in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the United States of America, doctors and professors have taken a keen interest in this device. A cardiologist confirmed 85% of patients return to hospital after not taking their medications properly, emphasising the importance of the Webster-pak smart base.
